About Stephen McCanse
My great passion for Canadian art led me to become an art dealer in Toronto, Canada, in 1992, specializing in historical paintings and prints dating from 1880 - 1945.
My approach is to seek works by established artists who have received recognition at the institutional level and who are members of recognized artists’ associations such as the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, and the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers. All pieces are purchased on secondary markets, both privately and through established auction houses.
I have completed numerous appraisals for major Canadian public galleries and institutions for the purpose of Cultural Property Donations and have sold art to both public and private collections.
To find quality works, I attend auctions across the country. I review all major auction catalogues and monitor sales of Canadian art on the Internet, and maintain close contact with fellow dealers to keep abreast of market fluctuations and regional trends.
All art is sold on an approval basis: I believe that clients should have the opportunity to live with the art before making a final decision and will accept trade-backs at full value, net of taxes, towards the purchase of another work.
I enjoy helping individuals and institutions, whether purchasing single pieces or collections, and I have established solid relationships with my clients. My services include ongoing consultation on the development of your collections. I would be delighted to discuss your interests in historical Canadian art with you.
